Buying a CCTV camera
Things to consider when buying a CCTV camera
Before buying a CCTV camera you will need to decide which options are best for you and your needs. Factors to take into account are:
- where the camera will be located
- the lighting in the area
- the field of vision that is needed
- the focal length
- the amount of money you are able to spend.
You may want to consider purchasing a higher quality camera for your entry areas (doors, gates and windows). Higher quality cameras offer better resolution and therefore a better picture of anyone attempting to gain entry to your premises.
If you need a camera which will survey a large area - particularly indoors - you should consider a wider-angle camera lens for these areas. A color camera gives the best picture and makes identification easier.
We suggest that you first draw up a floor plan of the area you are intending to survey. This will give you a better feel for the whole space and enable you to check distances, as these can effect the type of CCTV you may want to use for a specific area. You don't want to have to over-zoom your camera as it will compromise the quality of the picture.
The camera resolution you require should also be considered according to what level of security you require. Do you only want to be able to see someone's face or capture the complex lettering of a license plate? If so you will need a high-end, high-resolution camera.
Don't forget to think about vandalism. Is your camera expected to be an area where it will be subject to vandals? You may need a damage resistant camera, and to consider carefully where you will place it.
What about lighting? What light is available in the area you are planning on using the
CCTV. You may need an infrared camera, especially in poor lighting.
Finally, think about your budget. You may have to spend more to get a better camera, but perhaps a cheaper camera is better than no camera at all. If cost is an issue, you may well be able to save costs by looking at a VCR based system if space isn't a problem for you.
